We wouldn’t usually be excited by a Hollywood biopic or anything starring Eddie Murphy, but it’s hard to resist a slight feeling of excitement over Dolemite Is My Name. For one, it’s written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who have some form with Ed Wood, The People vs Larry Flynt and Man in the Moon, and more importantly, it’s the story of Rudy Ray Moore, one of the most jaw-dropping movie legends of all time. Anyone who has seen Moore’s Dolemite movies – Dolemite and The Human Tornado – will never forget the rhyming pimp hero, a ‘master’ of karate and lover of women who’s adventures are a feast of bad taste and outrageous excess. We’re huge fans, and dammit if the trailer for this new Netflix biopic doesn’t capture the wild and wacky nature of the films perfectly. For all we know, the movie itself might be a disaster, but we’re rather excited at this point.
