Blessed Virgin Be: Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta

Paul Verhoeven looks set for a return to upsetting the critical dullards with an erotic and provocative nunsploitation movie.

It’s rare for the trailer of a new movie to arouse our interest, but then it’s rare for Paul Verhoeven to make a movie these days. But even without the rebellious Dutch director in charge, it’s likely that Benedetta would’ve caught our eye.

Originally titled Blessed Virgin and based on the true story that inspired the book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy, Verhoeven’s film stars Virginie Efira in the title role, alongside Charlotte Rampling in what seems to be a classic return to the gothic, sex and horror soaked world of the nunsploitation film.

So, Verhoeven, Rampling, naughty nuns and general outrage – what’s not to love? The film is scheduled to premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where we look forward to the collection of bores and prudes who make up the critical mass of that event booing it off and walking out.
