Alternative fashion and wholesome bondage in a 1962 fetish book.
Sometimes, less is more, and never more so than in this 1962 publication from kink pioneers Nutrix. The Anything Goes Girls Bondage Club doesn’t just sport one of the best titles anyone could conceive of, it also features a collection of drawings by the prolific but mysterious Jay, who produced a fair amount of work for the legendary publisher.
Jay’s work is at once crude and stylish, very much inspired by predecessors like Eric Stanton and John Willie, but with its own vibe. The art here is definitely kinky, yet for the most part rather innocent and wholesome – and much of it feels like designs for futuristic fashion, never more than with the science fiction flavoured image of a space age city and car on one of the images. In a decade when there was a continual cross over between futurism and fetish imagery (look at Barbarella for example), these drawings seem impressively stylish, with only the ball gags and restraints giving the game away (and even they might not be too out of place on the catwalk shows of a fashion provocateur).
Like too much vintage erotica, the work of Jay and the publications of Nutrix have vanished into a collector’s market, the rights lost in the mists of time. Looks to me like Jay used photoreference for some of his figures. The woman on the left of the cover has quite a resemblance to Marilyn Monroe.
