Over the years, we’ve filmed a lot of bands playing live. Sometimes for promotional purposes, sometimes as single clips to appear online and sometimes just for the fun of it. Most of this footage has languished unused and – I’ll admit it – forgotten for years but we’ve finally been digitising our collection of old Mini-DV and Digital-8 tapes while we still can (the joys of technology marching on making it increasingly difficult to connect old cameras to modern computers), and we’ll be sharing the highlights as we work our way through it – including raw and unedited live performances such as this one from the belting female band Bitchfits (part Misfits tribute band, part original punk chaos), who we filmed at the much-missed Nottingham club Junktion 7 on May 6th 2008.
This gig was originally shot on two cameras – and if we ever get hold of a working HDV camera, we’ll upload the other footage too*. As it is, this is the only tape available, filmed from the side of the stage – but I think it captures the feel and atmosphere of the frenetic Bitchfits performance. There’s something to be said for unvarnished, unedited live music as a historical record of times past as opposed to the more polished and tweaked commercial releases.
There’s more where this came from (more from other bands on the same bill, in fact), as well as equally vital footage from the clubs, festivals, expos and events that took place during the 2000s as well as our new interview and video essays and our ongoing project to preserve forgotten and abandoned TV material. Stay tuned here and on our YouTube channel.
* If anyone has a working HDV camcorder gathering dust, feel free to pass it on – there is a good home waiting and you’ll be contributing to the preservation of cultural history.
