Desperate Video: Jaws, Kong, Disney, Depravity And Corruption

Desperate Living Video - Jaws

Here’s the latest round-up of Desperate Living videos from our YouTube page, which – if nothing else – should give you an idea of the eccentric content that is rapidly building there.

First off, we have parts two and three of our look at books dealing with censorship, obscenity and moral panic. In the first, we focus on literature and underground publishing as we explore books on the Oz magazine trail, the British horror comic bans and famous obscenity trials from Lady Chatterley’s Lover to Inside Linda Lovelace. In part three, we explore the self-congratulatory books of moral campaigners like Mary Whitehouse and Lord Longford, the Satanic Panic over children’s cartoons and academic studies of the shifting tides of the Obscene Publications Act.

On a lighter note, we’ve also been looking at vintage movie merchandise and curious tie-ins. Here, we look at the world of Jaws books, vinyl and curious novelties (from clothing to jewellery) that emerged at the time of the film’s original release.

Similarly, we looked at the tie-ins for the 1976 King Kong – books, records, board games and beyond.

And lastly – and certainly most unusually, you might think – we explore a strange collection of 101 Dalmatians novelties from the 1960s Disneykins series that were sold in seaside vending machines all the way into the early 1970s.

There’s much more video in the works – a look at new Blu-ray releases that your humble editor has recorded audio commentaries for, explorations of weird online tat, a delve into fanzine creation and plenty of other oddball, informative comment. Plus the imminent arrival of deeper-dive documentaries on movies, music, art and culture.

As ever, we encourage you to head over to our YouTube channel and subscribe, like and comment. Every view helps support not only our video work but also helps ensure that this site keeps going (yes, we know that we have been a bit slack over here – but we’ll be explaining all soon).
